Frequently Asked Questions

What tolerances do you hold on precision spacers and bushings?

We hold ±0.005mm on ID and OD for precision-ground bushings, and ±0.02mm turned-and-bored bushings. Concentricity between ID and OD is held within 0.01mm TIR. For production quantities, we use SPC-controlled processes to maintain Cpk ≥ 1.67 on critical dimensions.

What materials are standard for custom bushings?

Our standard bushing materials include: 1018/1215 steel (general purpose), 4140/4150 chrome-moly (high-strength), 316 stainless steel (corrosion resistant), 660 bronze (C93200 / SAE 660) for bearing applications, 6061/7075 aluminum (lightweight), and Delrin/PEEK/Nylon for non-lubricated applications. We also stock oil-impregnated bronze for self-lubricating bushings.

Do you machine bushings with lubrication grooves?

Yes. We machine straight, spiral, and cross-hatch lubrication grooves per customer specifications. Groove geometry (width, depth, pitch, and pattern) is programmable and repeatable across production runs. We also machine oil holes, grease fittings, and wiper ring grooves.

What surface finishes do you achieve on precision bushing IDs?

On precision-ground IDs, we achieve Ra 0.2µm. On precision-turned IDs, Ra 0.8µm standard, with Ra 0.4µm available with fine boring. Surface finishes are verified with calibrated profilometers. For bearing-grade bushings, we offer honing to Ra 0.1µm for critical applications.

Can you supply spacers and bushings with keyways or cross-holes?

Yes. We machine keyways (square, Woodruff), cross-holes, set-screw flats, and snap-ring grooves as integral features. Keyways are broached or slot-milled per ANSI B17.1, and all features are deburred before final inspection. We also supply mating keys per customer specification.

What is your lead time for custom bushing orders?

Standard precision bushings: 3-5 working days for quantities up to 500 pieces. Ground bushings: 5-7 working days. Production runs (500-10,000+): 2-3 weeks. We maintain a ready stock of common material sizes (bar stock) to expedite lead times for standard bushing geometries.

Buying Guide

Precision Spacers & Bushings CNC Machining — Tolerance Stack-Up Guide

1. Inner vs. Outer Diameter Tolerances

For precision bushings, ID and OD tolerances must be specified separately. Typical precision grade bushing tolerances are ±0.01mm on ID and ±0.02mm on OD with concentricity ≤0.015mm TIR.

2. Length Control in Stacked Assemblies

When multiple spacers are stacked, length variation accumulates linearly. Specify ±0.05mm per spacer and request sorting into matched sets for precision stacked assemblies and gaging applications.

3. Chamfer and Break-Edge Consistency

Inconsistent chamfers on precision bushings cause assembly issues. Specify chamfer size ±0.1mm with consistent angle. TruPart uses form tools for repeatable chamfers across production runs.

4. Material Selection by Application

Hardened 4140 or 52100 steel for high-wear bushings, 303 stainless for corrosion resistance, 660 bronze for self-lubricating applications, and 6061 aluminum for weight-sensitive designs.

5. Surface Finish Inside the Bore

For bushings acting as guide bearings, the internal bore surface finish is critical. Ra ≤0.4μm is standard for sliding applications. Specify honing or fine boring for precise bore finish control.
